Business in Spokane

I’ve lived in Spokane for almost three months now, and I believe in the city. My wife and I moved up here because she started attending Grad School at EWU, and because I do Design and Marketing, I could go wherever I wanted.

Spokane is quite a microcosm of America, and it represents many American ideals. Everyone has been friendly to us (except when they’re in their cars), and everyone believes in the American dream: working in the local community. There are so many local businesses in Spokane including almost all the storefronts in downtown, all the auto shops, and all the community projects.

If Spokane were a painting, and we as Spokanites were to judge ourselves only knowing the above information, I’d say that Spokane is fantastic.

If we add in some color by looking at the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Spokane, we paint a new picture.

In October 2012, Orange County’s unemployment rate was 7.2%1 and Spokane was only at 7.6%. Considering the Spokane unemployment rate was 9% in May, a change in 1.4% is fantastic.

The most up to date Occupational Employment Statistics (OES)2 of Spokane are from May 2011. 199,770 of the 473,7613 people in Spokane are considered employed, which leads to a 42% employment rate. This means that 50.8% choose not to be in the labor force.
